Driver Down the Middle: How to Pipe It Off the Tee
There is no better feeling in golf than watching your drive split the fairway and roll out while your playing partners nod in quiet respect. This video is thirty seconds of exactly that — driver, middle of the fairway, repeat. It is not luck. Striped drives come from a repeatable setup and one clear swing thought, not from swinging harder.
Setup Is 90% of the Drive
Most crooked drives are decided before the club moves. Tee the ball high — about half the ball above the crown of the driver — and play it off your lead heel. Widen your stance slightly, tilt your spine a touch away from the target, and pick a specific intermediate target a few feet in front of the ball, not just “the fairway.” A small target produces a small miss.
Tempo is the other half. The harder you swing, the worse your contact gets. Think smooth takeaway, full turn, and let the clubhead do the work. A controlled 90% swing that finds the center of the face will outdrive a wild 100% swing every single time.
One Swing Thought, Not Five
On the tee, commit to a single feel — “low and slow” on the takeaway, or “finish tall.” The moment you stack three swing thoughts, your body freezes. Pick your line, trust the setup, and swing with intent. Fairways are a decision you make at address, not a hope you have mid-downswing.
Pipe one down the middle and the whole hole gets easier: shorter club in, better angle, real birdie look. That is the compounding interest of a good drive.
